Let Antigonish Decide Community Update Meetings

A group of concerned residents known as “Let Antigonish Decide have taken legal action to challenge the consolidation plans of the Town of Antigonish and the Municipality of the County of Antigonish.

The legal action aims to quash the motion made by the Town and County requesting consolidation of the communities to the Province of Nova Scotia.

The group feels that members of the communities were not properly consulted on consolidation, and they have been actively working to force a plebiscite vote on the matter.

Four community update meetings have been planned. They will be held in Lakevale on January 25th at the Mini Trail Centre, Havre Boucher on January 29th at the Community Centre, in Maryvale on January 31st at the Fire Hall, and in Lochaber on February 2nd at the Community Centre. Group member Sarah Armstrong says, members will give updates on their various activities during the meetings.

Let Antigonish Decide has been supporting their cause by distributing lawn signs, writing letters to local elected officials, and a petition was started that obtained over 3600 signatures. They believe that a democratic vote is the only fair way to make a decision of this magnitude.

The Town of Antigonish received a letter just before the holidays from John Lohr, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to acknowledge that the request for special legislation for consolidation was received.
