N.S. man dies after sailboat got trapped ashore in Maine

A 72-year-old man is dead after the sailboat he was on got stranded on shore in Maine, United States.

In a news release, the Department of Marine Resources says it was around 3 a.m., Monday, in Isle au Haut, southwest of Bar Harbour, when the boat ran aground and began to break apart on the rocks.

Thomas Kent Smith was sailing with a couple from New Hampshire who called 911 when the 40-foot sailboat ran into trouble.

The man and woman say they found Smith’s body in the water after the boat broke apart.

They pulled him to shore where he was recovered by Marine Patrol, two hours later.

All three had been in the water for over and hour and were wearing life jackets.

A medical examiner will now investigate.
