2 Nova Scotians won an Oscar last night

If you watched the Academy Awards last night, you would have seen history being made! Local history! Tamara Deverell is a legendary production designer who has worked on movies like Nightmare AlleyPriscillaStar Trek, and most recently Guillermo del Toro’s movie Frankenstein.

She moved to Cape Breton a few years back, but last night she was in L.A. for the big night, the Academy Awards! She was nominated for her work on Frankenstein, and she won! She shares the win with another Nova Scotian, Shane Vieau of Dartmouth. This is Shane’s second Oscar win, his first was for his work on the 2017 film, The Shape of Water.

As far as I could find, they would be only the 6th & 7th Nova Scotians ever to win an Academy Award!

When speaking to reporters after her win, Tamara also made a point to talk about recent Government cuts:

“𝑰’𝒎 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝑵𝒐𝒗𝒂 𝑺𝒄𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒂 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒏𝒐𝒘, 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 𝒊𝒔 𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒔 𝒄𝒖𝒕𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒈𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕, 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒉 𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒆. 𝑾𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒘, 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕. 𝑰𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒉𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍-𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈.”
