Members of CUPE Local 5050 (Cape Breton Victoria Regional Centre for Education) are taking part in a roving rally today.
Chris Melanson, the Chair of the Nova Scotia Council of School Board Unions says they will be visiting MLA offices across the CBRM to demand a wage increase.
Melanson says these education employees work hard to provide a safe learning environment for students. Therefore, they deserve to be treated with respect and that also includes receiving a fair salary. They are currently among the lowest paid workers in the public sector.
Melanson hopes that these protests will remain peaceful while getting the attention of the elected officials and the general public.
CUPE’s Nova Scotia School Board Council of Unions filed for conciliation in January in hopes of finalizing a fair deal.
After ten days of bargaining with the province, CUPE education members have not been able to reach an agreement that secures wage increases.
The roving rally is expected to wrap up in Glace Bay at 5PM.
