Nova Scotia Legislature will begin its spring sessions today as members of the provincial government and opposition parties will be in session from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Opposition parties say that one of the focus points for the sessions will be healthcare. In preparation for today’s sitting, the NDP put out a release pressuring the Houston government on the amount of Nova Scotians waiting for a doctor.
NDP leader Claudia Chender said, “We need a serious response from this government about how and when we will see people begin to come off the waitlist.”
They say that the PCs are not doing enough to help families get the care they need on time, as more than 137,000 Nova Scotians are without primary care. That number is set to grow by more than 8,000 as the Spryfield Family Medicine Clinic and the Southend Family Practice are set to shut down in the coming months.
The release details the experiences of a patient from the Southend Family Practice Clinic. He is concerned about how long he will have to wait for a new doctor. The patient said there has been zero notice about how long the process will take.
The NDP said that “The Houston government’s inaction and inability to connect people with primary care is pushing thousands more Nova Scotians onto the waitlist in the middle of a health care crisis.”
