Woodlawn High School still has a long road ahead of it before it’s entirely distanced from the disgraced son of Queen Elizabeth II.
The school, formerly known as Prince Andrew High School, changed its name in June after allegations the Duke of York had sexually assaulted an underage girl at the home of infamous sex-offender, Jeffrey Epstein.
Those changes took effect on Aug. 1, 2022.
But changing the name is more than just changing the signs and logo on the gym floor.
“From letterheads, to stamps, to jerseys – there’s a lot there. And it’s going to be a transition,” Principal Craig Campbell said in an interview.
The high school’s football team, the panthers, is fundraising to raise the $8600 they need for new uniforms.
A GoFundMe had already raised $4600 as of Aug. 18, 2022.
The biggest donor was Dartmouth Metals, donating a whopping $4000.
The Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) is ready to help as well, Campbell said.
“We’re in talks with HRCE about how we’re going to come up with that money. And they assured us that they’re there to support us along the way.”
Campbell said the school community is embracing the changes as well.
“A name reflects the school and the school climate. And we’re moving forward with a new name, a new identity, with everything,” he said. “We’re excited to start in September as Woodlawn High School.”
