Town councillors in Antigonish have voted to lend their support to their counterparts in the Town of Port Hawkesbury.
Port Hawkesbury town councillors have sent a letter asking their provincial counterparts to honour members of the Mi’kmaq community by adding ‘Unama’ki’ to the ‘Welcome to Cape Breton’ sign at the Canso Causeway.
Antigonish town councillors agreed to send their own letter of support to provincial officials at Monday night’s regular meeting.
After the meeting, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish, said Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of Port Hawkesbury, asked for help from the region’s various mayors and wardens.
“She feels that it’s welcoming, it’s recognizing the Indigenous people in our area,” she said. “Council did vote to support that as well.”
