Local sports preview (Saturday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders square off with the Sydney Rush in Membertou to finish off their home-and-home series in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

The teams, who are at the bottom of the standings in the eight-team league, played in Port Hood Thursday night; Cape Breton West won to take a 2-1 lead in their seven-game season series.

Game time is 7 p.m.

 

The Northern Selects visit Halifax in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League.

Both the Selects (16-0-0) and Halifax (14-0-1) are undefeated in regular season play in 2019-20; the Selects are in top spot in the seven-team league with 32 points, three points up on second-place Halifax.

It’s the first game in the four-game season series between the teams.

Game time is 3:30 p.m.

 

The Cabot Highlanders play the first of back-to-back road games against the Voyageurs in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League at 6:30 p.m.

The Highlanders (9-8-3), who have won five of their last six, are third in the eight-team league with 21 points, three points behind the Valley for second, and two points ahead of the fourth-place Admirals; the Voyageurs (9-6-0) are tied with the Kings for fifth with 18 points.

The teams, who split the first two games in their four-game season series, square off again in Shearwater Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas are on home ice for a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They host Halifax.

The Novas (14-5-0), winners of five straight and eight of their last nine, are tied with Truro for top spot in the 12-team league with 28 points, two points up on third-place Bedford; Halifax (10-7-2) is tied with the Rangers for fifth with 22 points.

It’s the second game in the three-game season series between the teams; Halifax won the first 2-1 at home in September.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 5 p.m.

The Novas play their final game before the Christmas break when they host Pictou Co. in Antigonish Sunday afternoon.

 

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.

The Heatherton Warriors square off with the St. Croix Angels at 7 p.m.; the County Outlaws play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 8:30 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are on the road for divisional match-ups in their final games before the Christmas break.

The Cape Breton Eagles travel to PEI to play the Charlottetown Islanders.

The teams have split the first two games in their nine-game season series.

The Halifax Mooseheads visit the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Saint John has won three of the first four games in their eight-game season series.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

The Eagles and Mooseheads return to action with a home-and-home series against each other Dec. 28-29.
