Antigonish residents still fighting for vote on town and county merger

More than 75 per cent of residents in Antigonish want to have a vote on consolidation between the town and county.

The numbers are in a new survey conducted over the weekend by MainStreet Research.

President Quito Maggi says 58.8 per cent of residents are also less likely to support their local MLA and premier over the matter, and that these are both ‘significant changes’ from March 2023.

Maggi says over half of residents say the warden and mayor did not gain confidence for a consolidation, with the amount of information they chose to share.

It the second survey conducted on the contentious issue in Antigonish as some residents have been fighting for a special vote on the matter during upcoming municipal elections.

The town and county voted 5-4, to consolidate last month, after deliberating for more than two years, but the province needs to pass special legislation first.

That could happen as soon as the next session of the legislature starting February 27th.

Late last year, a Nova Scotia Supreme Court ruled the town and county had the legal right to ask the province for permission to consolidate.

The group Let Antigonish Decide, will host an information and financial meeting on the merger on February 25th.
