Did you know that Sears also sold homes? They sold more than 70,000 various plans of kit homes from 1908 to 1940.
I recently saw this one featured on a Facebook page called Old Home Living in Nova Scotia
Since I am a sucker for an old home, I had to learn more.
It seems that Sears sold the majority of their home kits to customers in the United States however, they have been found in Canada as well.
These homes were a project, not like a modern modular home of today.
The Sears home kit framing pieces were stamped with a letter and a number. When the lumber arrived on site, that number told you how all the pieces went together. The buyer would get everything they needed. Framing lumber, cedar shakes, screws, nails, paint, doors, doorknobs and even the drawer pulls for the kitchen cabinets!
I came across a website called Sears Archives. They have an extensive section on the home kits that you can check out here.
I was able to find an example of one of the Eaton’s kit homes in Canada from the Canadian Museum of History website.
