Feds funding airport upgrades in Port Hawkesbury

The Canadian government plans to give $2.2 million to the Town of Port Hawkesbury to upgrade its airport.

The funds will help replace the middle section of runway at the Allan J. MacEachen Airport.

Cape Breton and Canso MP Mike Kelloway said the change will help bring more planes to the airport and will help support local jobs and industry.

“These upgrades, along with several other significant industry developments underway in the Strait Region, will support
current and burgeoning commercial and industry activity, transforming the region and increasing airport usage,” he wrote in a news release.

The money comes from the federal government’s Canada Coal Transition Initiative Infrastructure Fund.

Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, mayor of Port Hawkesbury, said the runway replacement is vital to the airport’s sustainability.

The Town of Port Hawkesbury, in cooperation with the Airport Advisory Committee, members from the Municipality of the County of Richmond and the Municipality of the County of Inverness are very grateful for the support demonstrated today by the federal government,” she wrote.
