Antigonish mayor, warden, condemn racism toward Muslim community

The mayor and warden of Antigonish are expressing “deep concern” and “sadness” after racism toward the Muslim community.

In a joint statement in a news release, Laurie Boucher and Owen McCarron they say the actions from earlier this summer stand in direct opposition to the values they hold dear.

They go on to say Antigonish is, and always be a “welcoming community”.

“We are committed to ensuring that all our public spaces and neighborhoods are safe, welcoming and respectful for everyone. Racism and discrimination have no place in our community. We must all stand together to reject hate in all its forms and to support our neighbours, friends, and colleagues from all walks of life.”

It was earlier in August when a 69-year-old man was charged after leaving garbage and urine at the entrance of a Mosque.

He has been released on conditions and is slated to be in court in October.
