2 Antigonish Co. residents pledge $20K in matching campaign for housing society

Two residents from Antigonish County are donating thousands of dollars to a local organization.

Frank Gallant and Heather Mayhew have pledged to offer their support to a campaign run by the Antigonish Affordable Housing Society (AAHS) to strengthen their organization while new units are being built.

Seventeen are currently under construction on Appleseed Dr, with 50 to 100 or more coming to Route 337.

To help, Frank and Heather will match donations, dollar for dollar, up to $20,000.

Why help?

Frank and Heather volunteered with AAHS for several years.

Now, Frank says in a news release, they continue to be amazed and impressed with the dedication and leadership shown by not only the board, but committees, staff and multiple partners.

“Heather and I are hoping others are also inspired to contribute support in whatever way they are able.”

Franks adds, AAHS connects with the pressing need for affordable housing and shows compassion.

Echoing his sentiments, Heather says the matching donation campaign provides a simple, powerful way residents, businesses and partners contribute to lasting change.

“AAHS relies on the strength of its supporters. Community contributions have never been more crucial.”

Exciting time for growth

In one year from now, 17 new housing units are set to open on Appleseed Dr, that are currently under construction.

In addition to that, thanks to 20 hectares of land donated from a local doctor to AAHS, another 50 to 100 or more units will be built on Route 337, only 90 seconds away from the local hospital.

Chair of Communications Connie Clement tells our newsroom the money will not only help the construction but support their organization – and they are thrilled.

” [It will help] our community navigator’s salary, which we don’t have core money to fund fully and potentially a consultant to help us with the new development.”

Clements says it’s an exciting time for anyone who supports affordable housing, knowing the campaign will double their impact.

Donations will be collected on their website, until December 31.
