Department of Oceans and Fisheries Seize Lobster Traps in the Richmond County Area

The Department of Oceans and Fisheries has seized over 200 lobster traps near St Peters Canal and the Brae Do’r Lakes area. According to conservation and protection director Tim Kerr, the traps were found by Oceans and Fisheries officers on patrol. The traps were seized between October 12th and the 21st. There is an authorized lobster fishery for first nations going on at the moment, but these traps were not incompliance with the fisheries acts regulations. The live lobster found in the traps were all released back into the ocean.

Part of the investigation is to determine who the traps belong to and to ensure they are authorized to fish for lobster. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone that is aware of any illegal lobster fishing should contact their local conservation detachment or the RCMP.
