NSCAD University Takes Bold Step Towards an Accessible Unified Campus at Halifax Seaport

NSCAD University has made a deal with the Halifax Port Authority that will allow them to unify their three campuses at the seaport. Chief of Staff Bruce Debaie says the university is leasing 100,000 square feet of warehouse space that will allow them to build a larger and more accessible campus.

“We are thrilled to strengthen our relationship with the Halifax Port Authority as part of the ongoing transformation and revitalization of the Halifax Seaport District” stated NSCAD president Dr. Peggy Shannon. “The is a tremendous opportunity for us to dream big and extend our established brand into placemaking at a reimagined destination on the waterfront. It’s our time to step back onto the world stage with an iconic new campus accessible facility that will support and inspire creativity of the next generation of students.”

The goal of reuniting NSCAD’S Community in one location at the seaport is to create a stronger sense of community that will promote equity, diversity, and inclusion. While finalizing the lease with the Halifax Port Authority is an essential first step, Dr. Shannon says there is much engagement and planning work ahead with the NSCAD community before any aspect of design begins and all aspects of the project will evolve over the coming years.

Captain Alan Gray, the President and CEO of Halifax Port Authority commended NSCAD for being an important part of the seaport community for many years as they helped shape the district into the arts and cultural destination it has become, and they are thrilled to continue along this path with the evolution of Nova Scotia’s premiere art and design institution.
