Gaelic is still alive and well in the Quad Counties and investments are being made to preserve the language.
Inverness MLA and Gaelic Affairs Minister Allan MacMaster announced funding for community organizations to allow them to promote the continuation and growth of the language and its culture. “Language is at the heart of every culture and I applaud the efforts of those who work so tirelessly to keep traditions and language of their culture alive in our community.” Stated MacMaster.
The Mabou Gaelic and Historical Society will receive $32,775 for the “It Sounds Better in Gaelic Project.” Funding of $2,300 will also go towards the Inverness Development Association to offer beginner and intermediate classes in conversational Gaelic. In a related project, the Antigonish Highland Society is also receiving funds to offer a weekend Gaelic immersion course.
MacMaster says the Mabou Gaelic Historical Society has promoted the growth of the language and its culture in the county for more than 45 years and this funding will help them to continue their important work, adding that many people in the region grew up hearing Gaelic in their homes.
