The Autism Nova Scotia Strait Area Chapter has some big plans for 2023 and they remain committed to ensuring the Quad Counties are inclusive for people on the spectrum.
Representatives from the local chapter held a public meeting at the Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex in Guysborough to discuss programs and services for people on the spectrum and they brought up options on how to make the community more inclusive. Some people have had trouble attending autism events due to the travel distance and some local programs are struggling to provide accommodations for autistic children that would allow them to take part in activities. This includes not being able to find a personal support worker
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was agreed to create a support group to further discuss the needs of the area, how to access programs offered, and to create new ones. According to a survey conducted by the organization, people in Guysborough County are most interested in arts and crafts, outdoors, and music programs. The chapter is committed to working in one area at a time and they will continue to focus on creating accommodations in the Guysborough area until they develop a solid support base.
Raising funds is another priority. The chapter will be going ahead with their major fundraiser Walk Your Way for Autism, and they are looking for sponsors and corporate teams to help with fundraising efforts, this year they also hope to include local schools in the initiative. Plans to hold a touch a truck fundraiser are also being worked out.
New volunteers to help out at events are always welcome. Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age and go through a criminal background check before being vetted through the chapter. Call 902-777-1513 for more information.
You can keep up to date with the chapter and find out more about their fundraising and family fun events on their Facebook page.
