EverWind Fuels Receives Environmental Approval for First-Scale Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Project in North America

The EverWind Fuels company has received environmental approval for the initial phase of its $6 billion green hydrogen and ammonia project in Point Tupper. The first of its kind to be approved in North America and among the first in the world.

The approval was issued today by the honourable Timothy Halman, Provincial Minister of Environment and Climate change. It is a significant milestone for EverWind and their First Nations equity partners and it paves the way for construction to begin in the first half of this year.

EverWind acquired the Point Tupper Terminal in early 2022 and the site has the capacity to produce more than 10 million tonnes of green ammonia per year. They are on track to deliver green ammonia to German off-tankers E.ON and Uniper by 2025 achieving goals outlined in the historic Canada-Germany Hydrogen Alliance signed last summer. The site is considered to be ideal as hydrogen hub and it’s connected via critical infrastructure including rail, road, and pipelines in addition to its port facility.

Trent Vichie, the CEO and Founder of EverWind says this announcement creates the foundation of a new industry in Canada and Nova Scotia that will lead the green energy transition. “EverWind is establishing a globally competitive clean energy hub, unlocking immense local, national, and international opportunities presented by green hydrogen and green fuels.” stated Vichie “The environmental approval will enhance the regions’ ability to create the first mover supply chains necessary to scale quickly in new markets.”

The announcement was also welcomed by Laurel Broten the CEO of Invest in Canada, saying hydrogen is a critical tool in the energy transition and in how we meet our net zero goals by 2050.
