School support staff to hold rally outside Province House today

The Legislature is back in session and school support staff plan on making their voices heard.

The education workers, represented by CUPE’s Nova Scotia School Board Council of Unions (NSSBCU) will hold a rally outside Province House at 4pm.

They are fighting for better wages, as their average salary is less than $35,000 a year, one of the lowest in the public sector.

Members include bus drivers, early childhood educators in the pre-primary program, educational program assistants, custodians, food services staff, and tradespeople.

More than 5400 school support staff voted 97.5% in favour of a strike in an agreement on higher wages can’t be reached. They are scheduled to meet with the provincial government tomorrow.
