The New Glasgow Legionnaires outbreak is officially over

The Nova Scotia Health Authority has been trying to contain a Legionnaires disease outbreak in New Glasgow since early July. As of today, the outbreak is officially considered over.

There have been 10 confirmed cases and 22 probable ones since the outbreak began. It was first detected at Glen Haven Manor, a retirement home in New Glasgow. Most of the cases were confined to Glen Haven, but two of the confirmed ones were from other parts of the community.

In early August, officials detected Legionella in a water-cooling tower on top of the Aberdeen Hospital. It was believed for a moment that this was the origin of the outbreak due to its proximity with Glen Haven Manor, but it has yet to be confirmed.

With no new cases reported in weeks, officials with Public Health have deemed it safe to say the outbreak is over.

According to them, Legionella is common in Nova Scotia’s environment, however the risk of infection is generally low.
