Local sports preview (Wednesday)

The Cape Breton West High School Hockey League playoffs kick off when the SAERC Saints host the Richmond Academy Hurricanes in game one of their two-game total goal series.

The Saints (10-9-1) finished third in the six-team league with 30 points; the Hurricanes (5-14-1) were last with 16 points.

The four-game regular season series between the teams ended in a 2-2 tie, with Richmond Academy having a slight 11-10 edge in goals.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 7 p.m.

Game two is in Louisdale Thursday night.

There are also a pair of regular season make-up games- the Dalbrae Dragons host the Cape Breton Highlands Academy/NDA Huskies at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood at 8:15 p.m.

It’s a match-up of the league’s top two teams- the Dragons (15-3-1), who have already clinched top spot, have 45 points heading into their last game of the regular season.

The Huskies (10-7-1), who are locked into second with 31 points, play their final regular season game when they visit Eskasoni Thursday night.

The Inverness/Baddeck Academy Rebels visit the Eskasoni Warriors at 7 p.m.

The Rebels (9-9-1), playing their last game of the regular season, are locked into fourth with 27 points; the Warriors (8-10-0), who will remain fifth, have 22 points, and play their final regular season game Thursday night.

Inverness/Baddeck Academy has a 2-1 edge in the four-game season series between the teams, who will meet in the other first-round playoff series.

Antigonish’s Blade Mann-Dixon and the Halifax Mooseheads visit the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Mooseheads (37-13-7) have won three straight; they’re second in the eighteen-team league with 81 points- five points back of the Armada for top spot.

The Islanders (30-20-6) are tied for ninth with 66 points.

Halifax leads the nine-game season series 6-2 heading into the final regular season game between the teams.

Game time is 7 p.m.
