Hundreds gather in Antigonish to have vote on possible merger between town and county

Nearly 300 residents were on hand in Tracadie, Sunday afternoon, from all areas of Antigonish.

They gathered at the Hall, to discuss special legislation about a potential merger between the town and county.

To hear concerns in person, Liberal Leader Zach Churchill was there.

He says it was great to see so many people come out and make their voices heard.

A petition with more than 4,260 signatures was given to Churchill to present to the House, to demand a vote on the possible consolidation, as legislature resumes Tuesday.

According to a recent survey, more than 75 per cent of Antigonish residents say they want to have a say on the matter.

This was the second poll in less than a year, as the issue has now been an ongoing point of contention in Antigonish.

The town and county voted 5-4 last month to consolidate, but the province needs to pass special legislation in order for it to go through.
