More housing is coming to the town of Port Hawkesbury and the demand is high.
Council gave the go-ahead last week for an 80-unit apartment development for Memorial Drive.
Zoning and planning changes have been approved.
Four-unit buildings will be built, including quadplexes and row houses.
Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton tells us the response was huge after the developer announced the project.
“Overnight, he had a waitlist. That is just telling of the housing opportunity …isn’t that wonderful…but it also speaks to the need.”
She says the project will be on 20.54 acres and is slated to be built in two steps.
“Installing I believe 40 units, is the first phase…and these I believe are already built and it’s just a matter of installing them just connecting them to sewer and water, etc.”
Chisholm-Beaton adds that housing is “sorely needed” for everybody ranging from students to seniors.
She says work will hopefully start in the fall.
