More now eligible for veteran’s license plates

Nova Scotia is taking another step to honour those who have served for our country.

More veterans are now eligible for a specialty license plate.

The province says you no longer need to have served for at least three years to apply; now available to past and current members of the armed forces, RCMP and others.

Public Works Minister Kim Masland says the program recognizes the sacrifices and achievements made by those who have served and continue to serve during times of war and peace.

“We are taking steps to broaden the eligibility to make sure we are honouring those Nova Scotians who make the selfless act to protect our province and country.”

According to the province the updated definition of a veteran is “any person who is serving, who has honorably served in the Canadian Armed Forces, the armed forces of another Commonwealth country or its wartime allies, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command during wartime, or as a peace officer on a special duty operation.”

Nova Scotia was the first province to institute the veterans’ plates in 2002.

There are about 8,000 currently issued.
