Respected former Antigonish fire chief passes away

The Antigonish Town Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its own.

Honorary fire department member, Donald MacLellan has passed away after a brief illness. He was 91.

He joined the local volunteer fire department in 1956 and became fire chief in 1982.

MacLellan served as a chief for 25 years before retiring in 2003, after serving nearly 50 years of active duty.

In a social media post, the Antigonish Fire Department say MacLellan “was always trusted and respected” and “a great mentor to many.”

They add they are thankful for his “courage, compassion, dedication and commitment to our fire department and our community. He was a pillar of our fire department and the fire service. This is a great loss for us.”

According to his obituary, during his time with the department, MacLellan received two medals of bravery – one from the RCMP and one from the Governor General of Canada for two separate acts.
