Nova Scotians need more info about Trump tariff threat response, says opposition leader

Nova Scotia’s opposition leader says people need to know what the province will do if the incoming U.S. President follows through on his tariff threats.

President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to put a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian exports.

NDP leader Claudia Chender said Nova Scotians need to know how the province will respond if the tariffs come through.

“We need to know how Nova Scotians who will be impacted, whose livelihoods will be impacted. They need to know what to expect,” she told reporters on Thursday.

Trump also threatened to hit Mexico with similar tariffs. He said they would remain until the countries crack down on drugs and migrants crossing the border.

Chender said they heard a bit about what the province might do, but they would press for more information.

Premier Tim Houston signed an agreement earlier this week with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the other premiers—except Danielle Smith—to work together to combat the tariffs if Trump implements them.

But Houston did say he opposes the tariffs and that they would seriously impact 1000s of Nova Scotia jobs.

“That’s why, as a country, we’re working together to develop a plan to see how we can respond and see how we can support Nova Scotians. My number one priority is to protect Nova Scotian jobs,” he told reporters Thursday.
