Conservatives pick MacMaster in new federal riding

A former MLA and provincial cabinet minister will carry the Conservative banner in the next federal election.

Allan MacMaster was chosen to represent the party in the Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish riding after votes were held in Whycocomagh and Heatherton over the weekend.

“People are hungry for change,” said MacMaster. “They want a more self-reliant Canada that protects resources like our seafood industry, and waves goodbye to a government that is out of touch.”

More than 2,000 members cast ballots in the nomination process.

“I met Pierre Poilievre 15 years ago,” said MacMaster. “I can tell you he is someone who cares about what Canadians are facing, and I would be proud to serve our country with him.”

MacMaster did not re-offer in the last provincial election and signalled his intention to run federally last October.

He served as the MLA for Inverness for 15 years.
