Nova Scotia’s rent cap remains in place for now, but the government hasn’t made a decision on what will happen when it expires in 2027.
Housing Minister Jill Balser said the province will weigh several factors before deciding whether to extend the measure, which currently limits annual rent increases.
“The vacancy rate is a very important factor into any decision that we’re going to make,” said Balser. “Knowing that it is increasing, that is a good thing, but we’re going to continue to look at a number of pieces of information.”
Balser said the government will also consider data on affordable housing, input from community partners, and how the province is progressing on its goal of increasing housing supply.
“We will be transparent with Nova Scotians,” she said. “We’re going to continue to monitor the current situation and have more to share closer to that date.”
