Could ‘Wind West’ bring economic prosperity to Nova Scotia?
Premier Tim Houston released a video about the potential project, which would see a new transmission cable transport energy from new offshore wind turbines.
After cabinet today, he was asked how much the project would cost.
“I think an overland transmission line across New Brunswick and Hydro Quebec to Ontario, just in order of magnitude, I would think that’s a $5-$6 billion project,” said the Premier.
Houston says he wanted to capture the attention of the federal government, and he thinks they’re pretty interested in what’s possible.
“This could change Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada, and provide green, renewable energy that the world is looking for. We have a great opportunity here, and I think the federal government sees that.”
He says we’ve been handed a golden ticket.
The province is currently in the process of licencing 5 gigawatts of offshore wind energy, but Houston says offshore wind zones could generate up to 66 gigawatts.
