Woman, infant critically injured after hit and run in Eskasoni

A 25-year-old woman and an infant have life-threatening injuries after a hit and run in Eskasoni.

RCMP say it was around 1:40 p.m., Friday, when crews responded to a report of a vehicle hitting them on a sidewalk on Gabriel Street before leaving the scene.

En route to the scene, crews found the truck near the intersection of 74 St and Shore Rd.

A group of people had gathered and the driver had run away.

The 34-year-old man was arrested shortly after showing signs of impairment.

He was tested for drugs at the police detachment.

Earlier that morning, RCMP had responded to a report of a possibly impaired driver involving the same truck, but a search of the vehicle was not successful.

The suspect has been charged with:

  • Failure to Stop After Accident Resulting in Bodily Harm
  • Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm (two counts)

He remains in custody and will be in court, August 5.

Criminal charges are expected.
