Part-time SMU faculty vote in favour of strike action

Another university labour dispute is brewing.

Part-time faculty at Saint Mary’s University voted 87 per cent in favour of strike action last week.

In a release, CUPE local 3912 president Lauren McKenzie said they were ready to get a deal, and made every effort to identify the most pressing issues.

She says the university would only discuss wages, and not job security.

The union represents about 150 part-time instructors at SMU, negotiations have been happening for a year.

They say more than 30 workers have lost their jobs due to course cuts in May.
