A big step was taken Saturday to start the ball rolling in Canada’s first-ever offshore wind project – Wind West.
It involves a prequalification process, to get an idea of the companies interested in investing before a call for bids process starts.
The Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator would also look for a say from the public, key stakeholders and Indigenous groups to make sure the projects are environmentally responsible.
In a statement, Sean Fraser, minister of the Atlantic Canada opportunities agency, says Atlantic Canada has the resources to lead the clean energy future.
“Now we’re acting on that potential – turning some of the world’s strongest winds into good jobs, new investment and clean, reliable energy our families can count on, not just for today but for our kids and grandkids too,” says Fraser.
The federal government announced last week that Wind West would be part of the Major Projects Office (MPO) to help accelerate projects of national importance.
This project would use wind resources to deliver clean, reliable power to the eastern region.
Premier Tim Houston recently praised the $60 billion project, calling it an incredible opportunity with the ability to be able to power a quarter of Canada’s energy needs.
