Growing up, we had a mailbox at the end of our driveway and it was part of the morning routine to go get the mail each day. That routine is going to change for millions of Canadians.
Canada Post has announced it’s moving ahead with a plan to end traditional door-to-door home mail delivery across the country this fall, replacing it with community mailboxes. This means letter mail and small parcels will be delivered to a community mailbox near your street instead of right to a mailbox at your house.
This change will impact about 4 million addressess that still get mail in a traditional mailbox at the end of their driveway. Canada Post says there will be accommodations for people with mobility challenges who might have difficulty accessing the community boxes.
I haven’t had a mailbox in many years but many people do and it will be a big change especially for older generations. The reason for the change comes down to money, it costs much less to deliver to community boxes rather than individual mailboxes.
