The search for a missing newborn baby is over in Halifax, and two people are facing criminal charges.
Police issued a statement late Sunday afternoon, and said remains of an infant were located at approximately 3:20 p.m. in a wooded area off Old Coach Road, about 15 minutes west of Halifax.
The discovery was made after new information redirected the search to Prospect Road and the surrounding area on Sunday.
The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
A 23-year-old woman remains in hospital in critical condition.
Police believe the woman experienced a medical emergency and don’t believe her condition is the result of violence.
Police said they were first notified of the woman’s condition Friday night and that she appeared to have just given birth.
Four people known to the woman were taken into custody for questioning.
Two have been released, while two have been charged.
Sukhpreet Singh, 23, a relative of the woman, and his 26-year-old wife Ramandeep Kaur will appear in Halifax provincial court Monday.
They’ll be charged with concealing the body of a child, obstruction and indignity to a dead body.
The investigation remains ongoing.
In a statement, police Chief Don MacLean said these cases are among the most difficult for first responders.
“We feel the weight of this loss and are grieving with the community while working tirelessly to find answers,” MacLean said.
Mayor Andy Fillmore issued a statement yesterday after the recovery of the remains.
He expressed his gratitude to first responders, search teams, police, and healthcare workers for their tireless efforts over the weekend.
Fillmore acknowledged how difficult calls like these are and said his thoughts are with all those affected by the tragedy.
