A group that advocates important matters for seniors is aiming to rebuild their membership after taking a huge hit from the pandemic.
The Nova Scotia Federation of Seniors says countless past members died through COVID and many of the clubs they ran had folded.
President Anne-Marie Long tells us they are now trying to grow their memberships and recreate what they had.
“The most important thing I’d like to share is that for people to get involved. And to recognize that this Federation is here for them, and to give us your challenges and let us see if there’s something already being done that we can help with,” she shares.
Long says the top reason seniors should join is because they’re much stronger together.
She adds how they lobby provincially at the Seniors’ Advisory Council of Nova Scotia or federally at the National Pensioners Federation for challenges that members face.
Some club activities include knitting, sewing, quilting and exercising, along with playing board games and attending information sessions, according to Long.
She says they also advocated to get the Shingrix vaccine and the high dose RSV and flu shots for people 65-years-old and older.
Other activities enjoyed at clubs include playing bingo and cards, sharing music, discussing books and doing tai chi.
Long encourages anyone wanting to help the organization raise funds to enter their monthly 50/50 draw.
