It’s the end of a remarkable era in Canadian television and sports.
According to a joint statement from Rogers and CBC Tuesday, the CBC will no longer carry NHL games beginning next season.
It means the iconic broadcast Hockey Night in Canada will no longer air on Canada’s public broadcaster.
“Watching hockey on Saturday night is a time-honoured tradition for Canadians, and Sportsnet is privileged to continue delivering that tradition,” the statement said.
According to the statement, CBC will move forward with a “new sports programming strategy” after the success of the Milano-Cortina Olympics.
CBC has been broadcasting NHL games on television since 1952.
The move comes as Rogers begins a new television deal with the NHL.
