The Toronto Marlies captured the Calder Cup Friday night, claiming the championship in the American Hockey League.
And there were several Maritime connections playing significant roles in the title run.
Marlies captain Logan Shaw, an AHL veteran, hails from Glace Bay, N.S., and had nine goals and eight assists as he led the team to an unexpected championship.
Shaw played four seasons with what were then the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the QMJHL.
Defenceman William Villeneuve was a big part of the Marlies success, putting up two goals and 21 assists in 24 games.
The assists gave him the franchise record for assists in a single playoff run, and is tied for the second-most in a single playoff by a defenceman in AHL history.
An incredible #CalderCup playoffs for RHD William Villenueve, who finished with 2G-21A in 24 games.

Villeneuve will be familiar to QMJHL fans as a key part of the Saint John Sea Dogs Memorial Cup championship in 2022.
Dartmouth’s Jacob Quillan had three goals and six assists during the championship run.
Quillan suited up for 23 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season.
Landon Sim of New Glasgow had two goals and an assist through the playoffs.
Former Halifax Mooseheads captain Benoit-Olivier Groulx scored eight goals and six assists in the championship run.
Groulx played for the Mooseheads from 2016-17 through 2019-20, wearing the ‘C’ in that final season. He also spent part of the 2019-20 season with the Moncton Wildcats.
Cédric Paré, part of the Saint John Sea Dogs Presidents Trophy winning team in 2017, had four goals and six assists for the Marlies.
