Video: Distracted driver crashes in front of RCMP car on Highway 102

This police car did not have to travel far to get to the crash after an alleged distracted driver hit a sign and nearly flipped over right in front it along Highway 102 near Brookfield.

It happened on June 13 around 8:45 p.m., according to RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mandy Edwards.

They say the car was heading north when the driver lost control and crashed into the median. Investigators say they believe it was because of careless driving.

The driver now faces charges of failing to drive carefully and in a prudent manner.

Police are using the video as an opportunity to warn people about the danger of distracted driving.

Edwards says that it is a leading cause of serious and fatal crashes.

“We need to highlight that we need to pay attention on the roadway to prevent a serious accident form happening,” says Edwards.

In her 22 years of policing, she says she has never seen dash cam footage of someone crashing in front of a police car like this. Often times they will see video posted online by members of the public.

“But right before a police officer who is conducting safety measures on the highway, this is quite startling.”
