The East Pointers: PEI’s global folk music ambassadors

Few bands have represented Prince Edward Island on the international stage as successfully as The East Pointers. Blending traditional Celtic influences with contemporary folk, pop, and electronic elements, the award-winning group has earned a reputation for creating energetic, uplifting music that resonates with audiences around the world.

Since their formation in 2014, The East Pointers have become one of Atlantic Canada’s most celebrated musical exports, performing across Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia, and beyond. Their distinctive sound combines the rich traditions of East Coast music with modern production techniques, creating a style that is uniquely their own.

Originally formed by Tim Chaisson, Koady Chaisson, and Jake Charron, The East Pointers quickly captured attention with their innovative approach to traditional music. Drawing inspiration from Celtic, folk, and roots traditions while embracing contemporary sounds, the trio built a loyal following both at home and abroad.

Their debut album, Secret Victory (2015), proved to be a breakthrough release. The album showcased the band’s extraordinary musicianship and songwriting abilities, earning widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike.

In 2017, Secret Victory earned the JUNO Award for Traditional Roots Album of the Year, cementing The East Pointers’ place among Canada’s premier folk acts. The group also captured the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year and received additional nominations for their outstanding musicianship and performances.

The East Pointers faced a heartbreaking loss in January 2022 when founding member Koady Chaisson passed away unexpectedly. His talent, creativity, and infectious spirit helped shape the band’s sound and identity during its formative years.

Following Koady’s passing, Tim Chaisson and Jake Charron chose to continue the musical journey they had built together. Their commitment to preserving and evolving The East Pointers’ legacy has resulted in a new chapter for the band, one marked by resilience, creativity, and a renewed connection with fans.

The duo released the JUNO-nominated EP House of Dreams in 2022, followed by Safe In Sound in 2023. Their music continues to explore themes of community, hope, home, and connection while maintaining the high-energy performances that have become their trademark.

One of the reasons The East Pointers have enjoyed such enduring success is their ability to bridge generations of music fans. Traditional fiddle and Celtic-inspired melodies blend seamlessly with modern rhythms and production, creating songs that feel both timeless and contemporary.

Their music has taken them to major festivals and venues across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. Whether performing at a folk festival or a packed concert hall, The East Pointers consistently deliver an engaging live experience that encourages audiences to dance, sing, and celebrate together.

The East Pointers continue to release new music that reflects their evolution as artists. Recent singles including AnniversaryMaritime Moonshine, Misty MorningUndercover, and Rafters have further expanded their catalogue while staying true to their East Coast roots. Their upcoming album, Schoonertown, is generating excitement among fans eager to hear the next phase of the band’s musical journey.
