Few performers have earned the admiration and affection of Nova Scotia audiences quite like Evelyn MacRae. Known throughout the province as “Cape Breton’s Rose,” Evelyn has built a remarkable career spanning decades, entertaining audiences while remaining deeply committed to giving back to her community.
Her contributions to country music were formally recognized in 2022 when she was inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame, an honour celebrating both her musical accomplishments and her lifelong dedication to preserving and promoting country music in Nova Scotia. The Hall of Fame recognizes not only her exceptional talent, but also the generosity and compassion that have become hallmarks of her career.

Born into a family of sixteen children, Evelyn discovered music at an early age. She taught herself guitar by watching her older brothers play and she practiced on their instruments whenever they weren’t home. By just fourteen years old, she was performing in concerts, beginning a musical journey that has now spanned generations.
Today, Evelyn’s repertoire exceeds 7,000 songs, covering everything from traditional country and classic rock to Irish favourites, Newfoundland songs, gospel, and beloved Cape Breton standards. She is also an accomplished songwriter, having written many original songs, and has released an impressive number of CDs throughout her career.

Her musical career has taken her across Canada and beyond. She has appeared on renowned stages including the Havelock Jamboree, the Prince’s Theatre in Ontario, and the Calgary Stampede, while also performing in Nashville. Along the way, she has shared the stage with celebrated artists including Rick Tippe, Mac Wiseman, John Allan Cameron, Ronnie Hawkins, Rita MacNeil, The Barra MacNeils, Ashley MacIsaac, Beverley Mahood, Eddy Eastman, and many others. Her recordings have received radio airplay throughout Canada, Scotland, Ireland, and Nashville.
While her musical accomplishments are impressive, those who know Evelyn best often point first to her generosity.
Throughout her career, she has performed countless benefit concerts and fundraisers for individuals and families facing difficult circumstances. Whether supporting charitable causes, helping neighbours in need, or bringing music to nursing homes and seniors’ residences, Evelyn has always believed that music should serve the community as much as entertain it.
That spirit of giving continues today. Her social media regularly highlights performances supporting local festivals, community gatherings, and special events across Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia. Rather than slowing down following her Hall of Fame induction, Evelyn remains one of the region’s busiest ambassadors for traditional country music, appearing wherever audiences gather to celebrate local culture and community.
On Sunday, July 26th, she headlined Country Night at the Marion Bridge Community Centre, where she was joined by The Wild Country Band featuring Wayne Quinn, Todd Routledge, Andre LeBlanc, and Dave Hansen. Special guests Erin O’Brien and Terry Peters rounded out an evening celebrating classic country music and the traditions that have made her one of Cape Breton’s most beloved entertainers.
She also continues to appear regularly at community events, local festivals, and benefit concerts throughout Cape Breton, with additional performances announced through her Facebook page as new dates are confirmed.
For Evelyn MacRae, success has never been measured solely by awards or applause. Instead, it is reflected in the countless lives she has touched through her music, kindness, and unwavering commitment to her community.
Her 2022 induction into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame serves as a fitting tribute to a performer who has spent a lifetime sharing her talents with others. As “Cape Breton’s Rose” continues to perform across the province, audiences can expect the same warmth, authenticity, and heartfelt country music that have made her one of Nova Scotia’s most treasured entertainers.
