Penny Boudreau granted another six months of day parole

Penny Boudreau has been granted another six months of day parole.

Boudreau pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 2008 death of her 12-year-old daughter, Karissa Boudreau.

She was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 20 years.

Karissa’s body was found on the banks of the LaHave River two weeks after Boudreau initially told police the girl had run away following an argument outside a Bridgewater grocery store.

The court heard Boudreau wanted her daughter out of the way because Karissa was interfering with her relationship with a boyfriend.

The latest six-month extension was granted by the Parole Board of Canada at a hearing on June 18.

The board noted Boudreau’s recent absences from prison have been without incident, but said there is still work to be done.

In its decision, the board pointed to concerns around problem-solving in relationships, decision-making, insecurity, fear of abandonment and self-esteem.

Boudreau has been staying at a community-based residential facility during her day parole.

As a condition, she must report any relationships with men to her parole supervisor.

The board said she has not had a relationship with anyone since the boyfriend she was with when she killed her daughter, though it noted she stayed in contact with him for several years after her sentence began.
