Play tourist in your own town: a budget-friendly plan for summer

With rising prices making life stressful for many families, this summer is the perfect time to plan a budget-friendly staycation.

It is totally possible to have fun and make wonderful memories without spending a lot of money. Save on gas and accommodations by “playing tourist in your own town”.

In my family, we love making summer checklist. They provide a blueprint for summer fun, and there’s something satisfying about crossing things off as you go. Here are five ideas to get you started.

1) Get outside. Summer is the perfect time to get out explore, and every town has wonderful outdoor spaces to enjoy. Young children can visit new playgrounds, while older children may prefer outdoor sports courts, skate parks and playing fields. Local parks, beaches, and trails also provide perfect settings for summer adventures.

2) Grab a drink. Chances are your town has some great places to relax and catch up with family and friends. Make a date to visit a local brewery, pub, coffee shop, or dairy bar. Whether you’re looking for a morning coffee, an afternoon shake, or an evening pint, it’s a budget-friendly way to be a tourist in your town.

3) Eat local. Every town has its own local food trucks and restaurants, and it’s fun to make them part of your summer plans. To make the experience feel a little more special, order food for “take out” and enjoy an outdoor picnic. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to enjoy local cuisine and support businesses in your community.

4) Enjoy local culture. With school and work schedules keeping people busy throughout the year, it can be difficult to fully appreciate the cultural opportunities in our own communities. Summer vacation provides the perfect chance to embrace local culture. Consider visiting a museum, attending a festival or play, or supporting a local musician. It’s a fun and affordable way to experience the unique charm of your town.

5) Shop local. Exploring local shops is a fun way to spend some vacation time. Stroll down Main Street, browse yard sales, or visit a farmer’s market. You never know what treasures you might find, and you’ll be supporting the local economy. Win-win!

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to have a great summer. By exploring your own community, you can create meaningful memories without breaking the bank. Challenge yourself to make a checklist, start crossing things off, and enjoy being a tourist in your own town.
