A man is wanted for assault after an incident at the Halifax Costco that is believed to be motivated by hate.
Police say it was Saturday around 1 p.m. on Chain Lake Drive when it was reported that a man was yelling racially offensive language at a family in the store.
In a video circulating online, it shows the man threatening Muslim women in hijabs.
According to police, the man then approached another customer and assaulted him while continuing to shout racially offensive language.
He is described as a white man, 30-40 years of age and bald. At the time he was wearing a black t-shirt, jeans and black boots.
Disturbing, shocked
The National Council of Canadian Muslims called the incident disturbing.
Mayor Andy Fillmore says he shocked to learn about the “reported racist islamophobic incident”.
“Our neighbourhoods, workplaces, schools and communities are shaped by people of different backgrounds, cultures, and faiths. That diversity is worth protecting,” says Fillmore in a statement.
Adegoke Fadare, MLA for Clayton Park West, says in a social media post that it is important to remember that diversity is a value Nova Scotians share, and it unites us all.
“Every person deserves to feel safe, respected, and welcome in our communities. Our province is stronger because of the diversity of the people who call it home, and we all share a responsibility to uphold the values of respect, dignity, and inclusion,” says Fadare.
NDP leader Claudia Chender also condemned the racist rant, saying Nova Scotians are known for their kindness, and this is not who we are.
According to Lena Metlege Diab, the federal immigration minister and MP for Halifax West, many in the Muslim community will be shaken by the incident.
“But I want you to know that your friends, neighbours, and community stand beside you in condemning this deplorable act of hatred.”
