Online Canadian passport renewal service expands

The federal government is removing limits to an online passport renewal system.

The system was put in place in December 2024 but limited the number of users at any one time as part of the trial.

Any Canadian 16 and older can now use the service without waiting for a spot to become available.

Federal Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Lena Metlege Diab, says passport holders can renew when it is most convenient for them.

“It means less time standing in line and more time planning your trip that you’re looking forward to,” says Diab.

“It means people can access an important government service when and where it works best for them. For Canadians living in rural or isolated areas, for people with mobility issues, and for very busy people, this option can really change the situation.”

Users will need to upload a digital passport photo provided by a commercial photographer.

Diab says they can also provide copies of supporting documents instead of mailing them.

The online service also provides real-time updates as the application is processed.

Diab says people whose passports have expired in the last 15 years can also use the service to receive a new one.

She adds that the expansion of the online service is not intended to remove the ability to renew at a Service Canada centre.

“The announcement is about providing more choice and more options, not fewer options,” says Diab.

“You can always access by visiting a Service Canada counter. Canadians will still be able to renew their passports in person or by sending it in the mail. Those services are not going away.”

Diab says online renewal will be processed within 20 days and will follow the government’s 30-business-day or free passport guarantee.

Canadians who require a passport sooner must apply in person at a Service Canada Centre or a passport office that offers the 10-business-day, express or urgent service.
