A new sign at the Port Hastings Rotary has become a hot topic on social media, with residents weighing in on what should greet visitors as they cross the Canso Causeway into Cape Breton.
The large Cape Breton University sign is now one of the first many people will see after arriving in Cape Breton. While some have welcomed the new addition, others question whether a university located roughly 140 kilometres away should be the first landmark showcased at such a prominent location.
The discussion has also renewed attention on the condition of the “Welcome to Cape Breton Island” sign nearby which has become faded and weathered over the years.
The conversation goes beyond signage.
For years, the Port Hastings Rotary has been a source of confusion for some visitors. Concerns have been raised about road markings, wayfinding and overall navigation.
Plans were previously announced to redesign the rotary in an effort to improve traffic flow and safety, but the project has since been delayed & work is moving ahead on maintenance with crews scheduled to begin repaving sections of the rotary and Highway 105 toward Field Street in Port Hastings, extending the life of the current infrastructure and suggesting the existing layout will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
Whether residents see the new sign as a welcome addition or a missed opportunity, one thing is clear: people have strong opinions about what should represent Cape Breton’s front porch.
What do you think should be the first thing visitors see when they arrive on the island?
