How many times as a kid did your parents (mom, I’m looking at YOU) say to you, “take care of that, it will be worth something someday…?”
Well, if you happen to have an unopened Nintendo Super Mario Bros game, it is worth something for sure!
Heritage Auctions sold the game which had been bought as a Christmas gift in 1986 but ended up inside a desk drawer, where it remained untouched for 35 years, before being discovered earlier this year.
The game was one of the earliest copies produced that had plastic shrink wrap, rather than sticker seal. By early 1987, Nintendo was producing a version that had another new variation to their original packaging. Since the production window for this copy and others like it was so short, a game in new condition is very rare.
It ended up selling for $829,455 (CAD) which is well over the amount the previous world record for a copy of Super Mario Bros was. That one sold for about $143,268 (CAD)
Unfortunately, it seems the Barbie’s I had that my mom assured me would be worth something someday are not, in fact, worth anything. (admittedly, I gave most of them haircuts)
