Councillor very disturbed by recent racist graffiti incident

Guysborough’s councillor for Lincolnville-Sunnyville-Upper Big Tracadie says she was very disturbed by a case of racist graffiti in the municipality.

Vandals spray-painted a swastika, a racial slur and a vulgar word on a bus shelter in Canso earlier in June.

After Wednesday’s monthly meeting, Sheila Pelly, the municipality’s deputy warden and district two councillor, told The Hawk it’s upsetting, especially after a similar situation in Monastery a few months earlier.

“We were pretty disturbed that something like that would happen,” she said. “We just went through that with (East Antigonish Education Centre/Academy), so it’s been quite upsetting.”

RCMP were called in to investigate.

Pelly says municipal officials had staff members clean up the graffiti when they found out it was there.
