Hikers safe after night in Middle River Woods

Two hikers lost in Victoria County have been found.

Victoria County RCMP say they received a call from two hikers around 8:30 Saturday night indicating they had become lost on Gairloch Mountain in Middle River.

They say a 26-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman had gone for a hike earlier in the day.

The Cape Breton, Cheticamp and Inverness Ground Search and Rescue teams along with RCMP Police Dog Services began a search.

Due to the rough terrain, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) were also called and their helicopter located the pair Sunday at 7:30 a.m.

The pair were medically assessed at the scene before being airlifted to Cape Breton Regional Hospital as a precautionary measure.
