New street lights coming to Antigonish Co.

Municipal councillors in Antigonish Co. have approved some new street lights.

Councillors approved four new lights at their regular council meeting Tuesday night:
Bayfield Beach Rd.
the intersection of Summerside Rd. and Summerside-Bayfield Rd.
Hwy. 4 in Monastery near East Antigonish Education Centre-Academy
Loch Katrine Rd. on Hwy. 316.

After the meeting, Owen McCarron, Warden, said requests for a new street light usually come from residents concerned with dangerous intersections or dark corners.

“We evaluate them, we have a street lighting policy that allows a certain number of street lights per year,” he said. “We evaluate them based on the request that comes in from the public.”

McCarron said they typically do less than 10 street lights in any given year.

He said the process usually takes two months or so from first request, to completion- depending on the workload of Nova Scotia Power officials.
