We’koqma’q fishermen rescued from water off Newfoundland

Three men from a First Nations community in Inverness Co. are safe after their fishing boat caught fire and sank off the coast of Newfoundland.

The captain and his two crew members from the We’koqma’q First Nation were plucked from the water roughly 90 kilometres south of Port aux Basques Monday night.

In a Facebook post, Steven Googoo, a We’koqma’q band councillor, says crew members of a Marine Atlantic ferry travelling between North Sydney and Port aux Basques saved the three fishermen, who were in survival suits, and had been in the water for some time.

The men were taken to Port aux Basques; one was taken to hospital, and released.
